Lava at the ocean entry on the Big Island of Hawaii.

The Keeper of the Baltit Fort in Pakistan maintains the presence of this place from the past. This legacy of architecture reminded me of the time-tested porticos in Uzbekistan while the Keeper's natural demeanor inspired floral embellishments of crocuses and bushes from Ecuador and a dragonfly spotted in Sénégal.

After I returned from Pakistan, I learned that this woman is seen by many travelers in the Hunza Valley. I recalled that her wrinkles and cracks may tell a tale of her wisdom and beauty – like the blossoms of Baalbek's weathered ancient pillars in Lebanon, or the safety of a tortugas shell.

When I miss a good photo op, I call the moment a "memory for the mind." This blind Senegalese woman carries all her memories in her mind's eye. I gave color and character to things she cannot see: a blue footed boobie and iguanas from Ecuador, a Malawi sunset, and apricot blossoms from Pakistan.
